224921 SE Seminar for Doctoral Students: Liturgical Studies and Sacramental Theology: Exemplary study of sources: Episcopal election and consecration in Carolingian times
winter semester 2020/2021 | Last update: 04.05.2022 | Place course on memo listinsight into the processes of the appointment of bishops in the early middle ages; learning to analysze latin source texts
Up until the 12th century, the election of a bishop and his consecration formed two stages of an inseparable unit in the process of appointing the most important ecclesiastical office. From Carolingian times, very instructive texts have been preserved for both stages: election protocols, descriptions of the examination of the bishop to be ordained, descriptions and normative orders of the episcopal consecration. In the seminar we will analyze some of these texts together in order to get a comprehensive picture of the bishop's appointment.
Continuous assessment (based on regular oral contributions by participants), written paper.
Weekly preparation, oral presentations, written paper
