Participants will acquire a detailed understanding of major principles underlying financial market behaviour. In particular, participants will understand (1) how investors choose between risky assets, (2) how assets can and should be combined in different portfolio context, (3) how assets are priced in a market equilibrium, and (4) how the performance of investment portfolios can be evaluated. The course focuses on providing relevant conceptual background for practical implementation. It will also highlight the limitations of classical portfolio and asset pricing theory.

Major parts of the course will consist of: (1) Relevant decision-theoretic foundations for the choice between different risky alternatives; (2) Principles of portfolio theory and portfolio construction; (3) Pricing of financial assets in a market equilibrium, Factor models and Factor investing; (4) Market efficiency. Hypothesis, Empirical evidence and practical implications; (5) Performance evaluation for practical asset management; (6) Various ‘new facts’ in finance.

As Lecture/Tutorial (VU), the course is input-driven with an emphasis of providing an open discussion atmosphere. Participants are strongly encouraged to engage actively in class.

Due to Covid19 the course will be delivered online. Participants are strongly encouraged to engange via webcam and micro.
