Why do political societies or states exist? According to social contract theorists like Thomas Hobbes, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau the answers lies in human interests which pave the way out of the “state of nature” into statehood. In their particular theories, however, the three philosophers differ in their presumptions as well as conclusions. In this seminar we explore these differences, but also commonalities, in a systematic manner and thereby get to know three classics of western social philosophy and political philosophy, reconstruct their concerns and objectives and understand their lasting impact.
