Knowledge of selected concepts, historical and philosophical aspects of Indian religions and philosophies.

The philosophy of religion deals, among other things, “with a philosophical examination of the central themes and concepts” in religious traditions. This will be limited to central aspects in the three indigenous Indian traditions of Brahmanism/ Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Themes to be considered will include: basic presuppositions in Indian thought, the distinctions between philosophy and mysticism in Indian thought, the religious and philosophical implications of the karma and rebirth theory, the concept of the ‘self’, its bondage and freedom. The Indian theory of knowledge will also be briefly dealt with, particularly for its relevance when talking about the philosophy of Indian religions.
