Students get to know (modern) theoretical approaches to study individuals and societies and are able to explain how knowledge, education and inequalities are changing.

Different theoretical approaches to study the indivdiual and society will be presented and discussed. Students should know the nuts and bolts for analysing inequality and difference in modern societies (class, gender, dis_ability, eductaion).

Focusing theories of the 20ieth century, the lecture encloses interactionist approaches (Mead/Goffmann), social constructivism (Berger/Luckmann), and the analysis of power relation in education (Althusser) as well as theories of gendered form of subjectivation (Foucault, Butler).

Lecture, reading of original texts, discussions

Written exam at the end of the semester.
