605101 SE Interpretation of Latin Texts: Plautus, Miles gloriosus as a case study for Roman comedy
winter semester 2020/2021 | Last update: 20.08.2020 | Place course on memo listIn this course, the students gain a deeper knowledge of Plautus’ comedy Miles gloriosus. They know the text and the most important interpretative approaches, whereby the play is understood as exemplary for the Roman comedy with its characters, motifs, typical scenes etc. as a whole.
At the centre of the comedy Miles gloriosus is the abduction of Philocomasium by the soldier Pyrgopolynices; she is saved by her lover Pleusicles. The play is influenced by Greek comedy and became a classic, which gave it a rich reception in European literature.
