605103 VU Reception: Reception of the Classical Tradition in Film
winter semester 2020/2021 | Last update: 07.12.2020 | Place course on memo listThe students have gained insight into the theoretical foundations of reception research. This enables them to analyse modern treatments of ancient topics from different perspectives. They can, for example, understand the application of ancient history for (post-)colonial and political purposes, or the reshaping of myths in their context. By incorporating the earlier history of reception of central myths, students understand that reception is a multi-layered phenomenon.
Selected films from the birth of the medium until today will be discussed in their historical and artistic context. Examples of films are: Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus (USA, 1960); Sohrab Modi's Sikandar (India, 1941); Georg Lanthimos's The Killing of a Sacred Deer (Great Britain, 2017); Pier Paolo Pasolini's Edipo Re (Italy, 1967).
Lecture; joint discussion of films watched at home (1 film per week).
Collaboration (25%), essay (50%) and oral review of the essay (25%); international students can also take the exam in English, French or Dutch
