The lecture explores the ways in which the study of pragmatics, apparently directly related to speech, can employ written texts as samples, in order to gain insight into how written texts can also be considered examples of „interaction“.

Starting from the assumption that written texts do have „interlocutors“ in different, but comparable, ways as speech events, various text-types and various methodologies for their analysis will be examined. Especially relevant will be the notions of reference and deixis, and the ways in which they contribute to textual coherence.

Frontal teaching, discussions, small assignments on exemplificaiton of different text-types and analyses.

final written exam with open questions. Attendance is highly recommended.
