Basics of media analysis with a focus on the connections and relationships between literary text and music.

The VU is additional to the VO Media Sciences. The focus of this semester lies in the analysis of popular music, namely on the topic of migration. After the first introductory sessions that present the possibilities (and limits) of a (non musicologist) song analysis informed by cultural studies, the second part of the sessions will deal with exemplary analysis of selected chansons and rap songs from French, Italian and Spanish popular music, which reflect questions and problems of contemporary migration and refugee movements.

Lectures, presentations, group work

Active participation (no more than one absence) and final written paper.

Since the course is offered by the Romance studies department, students of Romance studies will be favoured in the enrolment, but of course other interested students are welcome as well!
