Students have a basic knowledge of theoretical approaches and research perspectives in the study of language and communication on the Internet and can discuss them critically. They also have methodological skills in the empirical study of language and communication on the Internet.

In the first part of the course, different theoretical approaches and basics of the reserach area will be developed and discussed. We will also deal with methodological questions and will apply them to concrete cases of analysis. In the second part of the course, we will focus on specific forms of communication on the Internet, for example in social media, such as Instagram, Facebook or WhatsApp, or new developments in human-machine interaction, such as chat bots or virtual assistants like Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa, which will be analyzed by the students. The students will present the results of the analysis in an oral presentation as well as a written term paper.
