In the 20th century, various relations developed between ‘East’ and ‘South’ on different ideological bases, from socialist internationalism to anti-colonialism to pragmatic trade interests. In this course we will deal with exchange relations, cooperation and tensions between the global South (Asia, Africa, Latin America) and the communist states of Eastern and Central Eastern Europe at the crossroads of the Cold War and decolonization drawing on secondary literature and selected primary sources. Themes to be discussed include economic relations, development policy, ideology transfers and forms of labour migration and educational mobility.
