626705 PS Voice, Speech and Presence in Teaching
winter semester 2020/2021 | Last update: 11.11.2020 | Place course on memo listTeachers are professional voice users. Their voices need to withstand the demands of prolonged vocal use. Teachers often have to speak for six hours a day in a variety of settings, moving from a classroom lecture to one to one tutoring. Their voices must cope with changing acoustic environments, the steady hum of background noise, centrally heated, dusty class rooms.
The sound quality of a teacher’s voice can support or undermine their authority. It also influences the classroom‘s atmosphere as a learning environment and can determine students‘ receptiveness. All this affects the teacher-student relationship.
In this training seminar you will acquire distinct techniques to achieve an efficient and effective use of the voice and body. These are your main instruments in communication. and the techniques you will learn can provide a starting point to an expressive and healthy vocal use,.a strong teaching personality and enable you to create a vivid learning atmosphere.
You will learn techniques of:
· Release, awareness and body language in communication.
· Posture and alignment.
· Efficient use of breathing, voice production and projection.
· Improvement of articulation and clarity of verbal messages.
· Well-aimed use of different parameters of practical elocution such as use of pauses, emphasis, speed, melody and volume.
This introductory seminar course is designed to be a training course for both body and voice. The training mainly consists of practical individual exercises, partner and group work to explore, develop and broaden your vocal skills. As in studying a musical instrument, you are asked to practise independently between the sessions.
