The acquisition of basic skills in dealing with ancient sources.

This is an introduction to monasteries and monks as social and political institutions in Late Antiquity. Participants will acquire scientific methods in Ancient History and a basic knowledge of the subject by analysing and interpreting monastic, ecclesiastical, historiographical and juridical texts from the fourth to the sixth century.

Combination of lecture, reading tasks, exercises and a final essay.

Participation and short essay.

Will be discussed in the first lesson.
