Critical analysis of historical sources and reconstructions based on them; writing of a short paper; development of analytical perspectives and own critical points of view.

In this seminar we will have a closer look on the difficult relationship of two of the most powerful political entities of Late Antiquity: The (Eastern) Roman Empire and the Sasanian Empire. Taking into account the long history of this relationship from at least the first century BC to its abrupt end in the seventh century, we will focus on the developments of the sixth century. Interpreting the most important historiographical accounts, we will consider the various interests that both sides had in cooperation, tension, and outright conflict. We will also try to differentiate between global (empire-wide) interests and local and regional interests.

Combination of lecture, reading tasks, exercises and a final essay.

Participation and short essay.

Relevant literature will be announced during the course.
