645207 EX Historical Excursion: "Melting Pot Vienna": migration - only a current topic?
winter semester 2020/2021 | Last update: 18.09.2020 | Place course on memo listExamination of the phenomenon of migration in the current urban landscape of Vienna (localization, museums, lieux de memoire), intensification of knowledge about this centrel historical process form Early Modern Times to present days.
Migration to Vienna is often depicted in media as a recent phenomenon. The analytical commitment of historians can prove that without migration Vienna would not have developed in the way we know today. Vienna is taken as a model for urban development which relied on various waves of immigration and emigration. Some of these will be studied between the Early Modern Period and present age. To name a few and skip many: from the Greek tradesmen to Czech building workmen, from the Italian composer to the Furlan icecream provider, from the French chambermaid to the Bohemian female cook and the Polish bedder.
Presentations of the course instructors and other local experts, preparation of historical material about the visited places. Commitment to discussions
active participation during the excursion, preparation of selected topics, if necessary resuming essay.
