Enlarged perspective on the phenomenon of nationalism and commemorative culture, skills in writing of longer historical treatises (wording, reasoning and defending of arguments) on the basis of a selected topic as well as the presentation of the newly acquired knowledge.

Daily, we can read in newspapers about enclosures of countries, about insisting upon the singularity of one own's country and population - very often accompagied by patriotic self-styling and abasement of others at the same time. Arguing with history is playing a big part in this discussion. There, mythical as well as traumatic events are to be found. This shows the ongoing presence of the old nationalistic thinking, deriving from the nineteenth century.

We can see these processes very well in the successor states of the Habsburg monarchy. Already before the separation in 1918, different groups developed their own specific national thinking and approaches. After 1918, the new states unterwent partly the same, but partly very different events - thinking of the Second World War, the different federal states of Austria, the so called Eastern-bloc countries, their way after 1989 as well as the Yugoslav wars.

After a thorough examination of the phenomenon nationalism we start with reports in actual newspapers und follow the historical argumentation - including commemorative culture - back in time.

The seminar assists and supports the Bachelor's Thesis regarding working skills and content. Short lectures, reading, discussing of articles and interactive presentations by the students.
