Students acquire specialist knowledge on the topic of the "social history of photography" and basic knowledge of scientific work. They are practised in critically dealing with historical, visual sources and secondary literature. Furthermore, they can present their newly acquired knowledge in oral and written form.

When it was "invented" around 1830 in France, contemporaries celebrated photography as a democratic medium of the bourgeoisie, which promoted social equality; now it was no longer reserved only for the nobility to be portrayed. Even if it took some time before poorer social classes could actually afford a photograph of themselves, the introduction of this technical imaging process brought new social practices overall. The proseminar deals with the socio-historical aspects of photography from its invention to the "Knipser"- photography of the 20th century.

Inputs of the course leader, joint discussion of scientific articles, practice of scientific work and presentation as well as the handling of visual sources, theoretical and practical guidance for the independent writing of a PS-work.
