Students should know key terms, texts and representatives of (anti)feminist theories and be able to place them in their respective historical and cultural context; they should be able to analyse (anti)feminist arguments.

Since the 2000s, attacks against the liberalization of gender relations, gender mainstreaming and gender studies have been on the rise, especially from ultra-religious, right-wing conservative and populist movements and parties. Anti-feminism as a world-view opposed to emancipatory endeavours and the denormalisation of gender relations has a long history: since the beginning of the first women's movements, counter-reactions have been recorded which propagated naturalized and traditional gender (role) concepts.
The seminar will trace discursive dynamics and social developments on the basis of historical and contemporary sources. Presentations by students on feminist movements and contemporary historical frameworks will enable a contextualization of (anti)feminist discourses. It will be worked out against the background of which gender relations women's movements and feminist initiatives stand up for which goals, on the basis of which theories and gender concepts this takes place and which actors position themselves and position themselves against feminist initiatives. In addition, the study will look at the intertwining of feminism and anti-feminism, as can currently be found, for example, in the form of the implementation of women's rights in the context of anti-Muslim and migration-critical arguments.
