Students aquire knowledge about basic optical and electronic properties of different material types and about new materials, e.g. high-temperature superconductors and nanostructured materials. The students then apply their theoretical knowledge and practice the determination of these material properties.

Metals, semiconductors, superconductors, correlated systems, nanomaterials; transport properties.

How does this course work this semester?

What do you need to do in the first week of the semester? --> Watch Video1 under "Week1" in advance, then meet (attendance duty) on Wed, 7.10., 16:00 in the Virtual Classroom, where we agree on a weekly online appointment (see below), which I will set up in the OLAT, and clarify questions about Video1 and Short Test1.

General info: There is no final exam, but 14 short tests. The script is provided as pdf-files. Lectures (in the form of "commented and animated" powerpoint videos) and short tests are processed sequentially, i.e. week after week. The videos are always available from Monday, each short test is briefly explained at the end of the video, then there is time until Sunday to download the task and upload the solution in the OLAT. The solution is briefly presented after the deadline (also by video), usuually at the beginning of the next lecture-video. There are 14 short tests, 2 non-submitted are tolerated. Each participant must therefore submit at least 12/14, the grade is then "successfully passed".

It does not matter whether the answers are exactly right, but rather "digest the VU substance". A group work/discussion with other participants on the solution is permitted/wanted. The weekly presence in the "virtual classroom" serves to discuss the solutions of the test among the participants (and e.g. to submit your solutions immediately afterwards). The discussion etc. should not exceed 20-30min. Each participant must upload his version of the solution. I am not usually present at the weekly appointment, if there are important questions about the lecture or the short test, then tell me in advance, then "I also come to the classroom".
