· to be aware of the scope of ecology and able to select areas for further study;

· to understand  the basic principles of the physical environment and the biosphere;

· to understand how organism and ecosystems cope with environmental variations;

· to understand organismal and population ecology;

· to be alert to the complexity of ecological systems and able to address controversial issues in a rational way.

Ecology is the study of the interaction between organisms and the environment. In this course we will investigate the relationship between abiotic (nonliving) and biotic (living) components of an ecosystem. Building upon an introduction to environmental factors, we will examine the interplay between these components at the organismal, and population levels. Students will be introduced to the principal ideas, theories and methodologies currently engaging ecologists. The course encompasses both terrestrial and aquatic systems; however, it emphasizes terrestrial systems. Plant and animal ecology receive approximately equal treatment.  Ecosystem, landscape and global ecology will be subject in other courses (3rd semester).

The class will meet two times per week and will be conducted with both lectures and in-class discussions. Additional material on the subject can be downloaded from OLAT.

Assessment for this course is through a written examination.
