Using European and international examples, students will gain an overview of protest events and social movements in their social and political context. They will be able to understand protest forms in a more contextual way and within the social, cultural and national context.

Around the world people protest for social changes. Be it for reasons of climate protection, as in the global protests of Fridays for Future, against corruption and for democratic participation, as is currently the case in various South American countries, or against foreign rule and the curtailment of democratic freedoms, as in Hong Kong. Protests make use of the historically transmitted and culturally grown protest repertoire and reinterpret protest forms. The boundaries of protest are broken and redefined not only within the movements, but also in confrontation with the state counterpart.

The lecture series is dedicated to European and international examples, protest events and social movements in their social and political context. The focus is on the question of how protest is carried out, what development protest forms undergo and how they are integrated into social, cultural and national conditions.
