Latin America is mostly a little-known area, with Spanish as the dominant language in use. In this course, students will get to know Latin America through its language and culture along with regional and economic characteristics. Culture-specific communication patterns, basic rules of social conduct, economic features and challenges as well as the development of the current political system will be analyzed and elaborated on in an interactive way. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to acquire basic skills in Spanish within one semester.
For reasons of learning efficiency, the course will be held in blocks of 4 hours per week. A simulated journey through Latin America will be the framework for getting to know Latin America in group work, discussions, presentations and simulations.
Student performance will be assessed through their participation (25 %), presentations (50 %) and simulations (25 %).
The necessary literature will be made available in the course and on OLAT
