The course provides students with an insight into the political, ideological and philosophical interrelationships of architecture, urban development and landscape of the first half of the 20th century.

The students develop skills on how to derive critical analyses, theoretical strands or approaches from the presented positions.

The course is designed against the background of the European Council Directive (85/384/EEC), Article 3. This is about studying architecture:

„Education and training leading to diplomas, certificates and other evidence of formal qualifications referred to in Article 2 shall be provided through courses of studies at university level concerned principally with architecture. Such studies shall be balanced between the theoretical and practical aspects of architectural training and shall ensure the acquisition of:

1. an abilityto create architectural designs that satisfy both aesthetic and technical requirements,

2. an adequate knowledgeof the history and theoriesof architecture and the related arts, technologies and human sciences,

3. a knowledgeof the fine arts as an influence on the quality of architectural design,

etc.“

This academic year, the lectures Architectural Theory 2 and M will focus on Austria. The central focus is on continuities in Austrian culture, as expressed in three important avant-gardes - the Fin de Siècle, the interwar period and the fifties and sixties.
