Upon successful completion of both this course and the accompanying lectures of Strength of Materials 1 and 2 students are able to describe the behavior of deformable solids, subjected to multi-axial stress- and strain states, to determine section forces, stresses and deformations of statically determinate and simple statically indeterminate structures. The latter skills are prerequisites for subjects like structural analysis, concrete construction, steel construction, timber construction and geotechnics.

The tutorial follows the lecture course on “Strength of Materials 2”. Computational methods for solving simple problems of linear beam theory, viscoelasticity and plasticity theory are demonstrated and instructions for independent work on such problems are given.

The course follows the respective chapters of the book “Festigkeitslehre – Aufgaben und Lösungen” by R. Stark. In particular, it covers

  • Linear beam theory - shear stresses due to shear force and torque, shear center
  • Linear beam theory – elastic line,
  • Principles of virtual work applied to beam theory,
  • Stability problems,
  • Yield criteria and fracture criteria,
  • Nonlinear elastic and inelastic material behavior,
  • Plastic hinge analysis,
  • Limit theorems of plasticity theory.

In the tutorials the above mentioned models are applied for solving relatively simple engineering problems and the appropriate solution strategies are demonstrated at the blackboard step by step. To assess the own state of knowledge, the students have access to the learning platform OLAT where assignments are posted weekly.

Collateral monitoring of performance during the tutorial and ascertainment of the level of knowledge by two exams.
