summer semester 2021 | Last update: 19.01.2021 | Place course on memo listAcquaintance with the concepts of trust and trustworthiness; orientation within the contemporary literature on the topic.
Sometimes we can figure out things for ourselves. Sometimes we need to trust others and take their word for it. But what does it mean to trust others (for a certain epistemic good – such as knowledge, warranted belief, or understanding)? What is (epistemic) trust? When is (epistemic) trust warranted or rational? How can we recognize trustworthy epistemic agents and sources of information? And what does trustworthiness exactly require? In this class, we will read a colorful palette of authors who deal with these and related issues.
Text reading, student presentations and discussions.
