Students know about the historical background of Islam and the basics of the Islamic belief system(s). They are able to recognize the importance of theological statements for contemporary Christian-Muslim relations and critically reflect Christian and Islamic theologumena.

The course offers an introduction to Islamic history and theology in its plurality. Themes include inter alia: Muhammad as a prophet, Quran and Sunna, Islamic law/Sharia, selected themes of Islamic theology and philosophy, basics of Christian-Muslim dialogue. One focus will be recent debates about Islam and Muslims in Europe and the compatibility of Islam and the constitutional state.

Lecture, compulsory literature, discussion.
