Students are able to independently develop and implement a research design to answer a scientific question. The research design includes both data collection and data analysis. Students learn to apply valid and replicable research.

In this course, students will learn how to apply quantitative text analysis (QTA) on research questions in the field of political science. Students will get to know classification (topic models) as well as scaling methods (correspondence analysis, wordscores and wordfish) for the analysis of texts. They will learn how to use these approaches within the framework of R and RStudio, and they will be introduced to quanteda, the leading QTA package in R. At the end of the course, students will know how to:

  • use R and RStudio;
  • import data into RStudio;
  • prepare data for processing;
  • transform a corpus to a document-term-matrix (dtm) and to a document-feature-matrix (dfm);
  • analyze the dfm with the four approaches;
  • graphically display and interpret the results.
