Evaluation is an everyday linguistic practice that we perform in different contexts and domains by using many verbal and multimodal means. In this seminar, we look at selected aspects of this phenomenon:
- From an interactional viewpoint, evaluation is an interactive construction.
- Several text types (e.g. reviews) can be defined by their evaluative text function.
- In school, teachers assess the linguistic competencies of pupils and on the other hand pupils learn how to assess in an appropriate manner.
- Emotions are often equated to evaluations, rendering the expression of emotions an evaluation.
The goal of the course is that you learn how to analyze evaluations by conducting a linguistic project yourself.
