Ability to describe literary, historical and cultural contexts of representative authors,  works and genres of literature and their canonization; you can describe the interaction of social, literary and cultural history; interpretation of literary texts according to scientific standards.

Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, Gabriele Reuter, Vicki Baum, Adelheid Popp, Franziska zu Reventlow, Irmgard Keun. Despite their sometimes enormous literary success, the aforementioned authors seem to have long disappeared from literary memory and canon. Only through the efforts of feminist literary studies have they been and are gradually gaining a place in literature, even if this is often not accompanied by adequate literary recognition.
This course is therefore dedicated to women in literature 'around 1900'. On the one hand, the course will examine female characters in literature and, on the other hand, works written by women.  A special focus will be placed on the topics of gender, sexuality, the women's movement and female authorship.

Intensive reading and formal analysis; placement in the literary-historical context and critical review of central themes.

Familiarity with texts, presentations and participation in discussions, written paper .
