A systematic and reflective approach to literary texts and their reasoned interpretation

“Can one not, whilst smiling, also be serious?” (Gotthold Ephraim Lessing)

Time and again, it can be seen that solemnity and humour play a significant role in literature. However, amusing books have been increasingly overlooked in literary discourse. In the current sombre climate of Covid-19, this seminar focuses on light-hearted and humorous literature.

The texts in focus range from the 19th century to the present day and include authors such as Georg Büchner, Ferdinand Raimund, Christine Nöstlinger, Vea Kaiser and Joachim Meyerhoff. Students will methodically analyse the texts in terms of form, style, content and reception.
