Skills for critical examination and presentation of essential methods and strategies in Media Studies applied to a concrete example

More and more frequently literary texts can be read on the internet, yet we have to realize that not any offer (especially a free one) is high-quality. It is the task of scholarly editing to examine the principal sources of the humanities and make them available to the public. More and more scholarly editions of a high level are freely accessible. Frequently they offer a view at manuscripts or link with external information.

In this exclusive course, which is part of a guest professorship, we learn about scholarly editing, participate in an editing exercise and explore its specific benefit in a world of digitized knowledge. We deal with characteristic examples of digital editions (e.g. Vincent van Gogh’s letters and Goethe’s Faust) and prepare transcriptions of letters from the 19th century in the context of a currently emerging edition (cf. www.august-wilhelm-schlegel.de).
