 In this seminar we will discuss a range of representations concerned with refugees and their experiences of time, bureaucracy and uncertainty. While refugees are often being represented as a mobile and faceless body of people, a central experience of migration is made up by waiting, delay and indeterminacy, an experience Jean-François Bayart calls a “permanent state of stand-by” (Bayart 2007: 271). Sharam Khosravi argues in a similar way: “Large numbers of displaced people – undocumented migrants, refugees and asylum seekers – spend extended periods waiting in camps, in transit lands, or in search of papers.” (Khosravi 2014: n.p.) 

In this seminar we will discuss a range of cultural representations – such as short-stories, photography, Instagram-poetry, music-videos, etc. – and the narrative limits of these very representations, when it comes to communicating the experience of being ‘out of time’. Concepts from the Introduction to British Cultural Studies, such as gender, class, nation, identity, othering, stereotyping, etc., will offer the theoretical framework for our explorations.
