 Literature, Ethics & Social Justice

This digital course seeks to introduce students to key concepts, trends, and directions in the field of contemporary literary studies, broadly understood, with a special focus on ethics and social justice. In these synchronous sessions, we will analyze a selection of written and visual texts, paying special attention to recent trends in the genre of young adult literature (YA). We will draw a road map of several theoretical and methodological frameworks, such as critical disability theory, Black feminist theory, Indigenous methodologies, and transnational studies. Special attention will be paid to terms such as intersectionality, difference, racial justice, gender, response-ability, identity, ability, and unlearning. Ultimately, these sessions should provide students with critical and ethical awareness of literary trends and theoretical concepts and ways to apply these to their research and pedagogical studies. At the same time, this course seeks to provide room for intellectual discussion and exploration, as well as time for creative and academic writing.

The sessions will be structured around broad critical and ethical questions in education (human dignity, critical awareness, joy and experimentation, identity, environmental awareness, democracy, racial justice, and ethical awareness). We will discuss the following topics, theoretical approaches, and didactic methods: * Critical Disability Studies: Representations of Ability & Disability in YA Literature/Screen Cultures * Black Feminist Theory & Intersectional Analysis to Literature * LGBTQ+ Literature in the Classroom & Inclusive Pedagogies * Ethics in Literature & Research * Social Justice YA Literature * Indigenous Literatures * Transnational Literatures in Canada * Democratic Values through Refugee Literature
