The students are instructed to read, interpret and categorize various texts of Italian literature and to effect their own scientific analysis. The course is conceived as a preparation on literary proseminars and other courses of advanced literary studies.
The course includes the following contents:
1) introduction to close reading of literary texts;
2) terminology and methodology of narrative, dramatic and lyrical text analyses;
3) text analysis and interpretation as a base discipline of literary studies.
The authors and the pieces of literature discussed in this course are:
- Francesco Petrarca's Canzoniere (selected poems)
- Carlo Goldoni's Locandiera
- Giovanni Verga's Rosso Malpelo
The described contents should be acquired by means of the students’ active participation, and each of them is to be practiced by concrete activities, namely the analysis of a poem, two short literary essays about a theater piece and a prose text, and the summary of a research article.
The activities mentioned below "methods“, which are to be accomplished by the students, form as well the basis for grading.
The students will be provided with the necessary texts during the semester.
Sufficient linguistic proficiency for the reading of literary texts. Completed level II of language courses is recommended.
Due to substantial differences in the allocation of ECTS-Credits in various curricula (teacher training programs/specialized degree programs), the requirements for this course vary. Information will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
