An understanding of the contrasts between English and German on various linguistic levels.

The proseminar analyzes the two languages from synchronic and diachronic perspectives. 

Depending on students' interests, topics may include the origins and development of the Germanic languages; morphology and syntax; contrastive phonology; phoneticity and orthography; tense and aspect; borrowing & interference; lexical specificity vs. generality; the historical role of and attitude toward borrowing.

Workshop-based course, presentations, discussions, proseminar paper.

Continuous assessment: presentation, class participation, written proseminar paper (in German or English).

Literature recommendations will be discussed in class.

Participants must have successfully completed compulsory module 7. Please bring a copy of your transcript of records with you to the first session.

The proseminar paper written in this course can be used as a basis for a bachelor's thesis.
