Acquisition of competences and a critical attitude in dealing with historical sources and representations of history as well as the ability to present the newly-acquired knowledge in oral and/or written form; acquisition of the competent use of relevant scientific methods.

One of the central goals of Zionism - the Jewish National Movement - was to understand and explore the Land of Israel through science. The basic assumption of this course is that science was the tool, through which the Zionist movement sought to fulfill itself. During the semester we will read sources and analyze central aspects of today's Israel through the prism of different academic disciplines such as: sociology, history, archaeology, architecture, botany, medicine etc.

Reading, oral presentations and handout, written paper, discussion; teacher's lecture.

Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, regular and active participation in discussions, oral presentation and handout, paper (max. 5 pages).

Will be provided at the start of the course.

Reading list will be provided.
