The students should become acquainted with the history of the interpretation of the Qur'an as well as with traditional and modern methods of interpretation and acquire in-depth knowledge in dealing with classical Qur'an commentaries and their contextualization. They should be able to differentiate between different hermeneutic approaches and get to know their approaches.

The course will cover the history of the Qur'an interpretation. The main focus is on the treatment of important commentators of the Koran, classical works and different interpretive methods, but also on different trends and approaches to the Qur'an.
