Topic-specific use of skills for critically analysing sources and methodological skills in the practice of ancient history.

Parallels as well as differences between early Greek and cuneiform epic are subject of a lively debate. The students will discuss text passages amongst others from the Homeric epics, Hesiod’s works, the Epic of Gilgamesh and Enuma Elish. Furthermore, culture contact models as well as thematic links to the material remains will be examined. This enables a contextualisation of possible literary adoptions, adaptations and their potential way of transmission. An in-depth examination of early Greek epic and selected cuneiform literature will provide an introduction to the field of Ancient History and at the same time show the possibilities but also limitations of source interpretation.

Combination of lecture, reading tasks and group work.

Evaluation of participation in group work, discussions, reading tasks and the essay.
