This proseminar examines the history of trade in the early modern period, with a focus on the Habsburg Monarchy in the 17th and 18th century. Here, different places and routes of trade (markets, the Danube trade) and regional differences of the trading areas will be examined. Furthermore, the transport routes of globally produced goods (sugar, tea, coffee, tobacco) or raw materials such as cotton and silk from their place of origin to the local markets will be traced. Which local products, on the other hand, were successfully traded on the European markets? The role of influential merchant families in long-distance trade will also be examined. In addition, early modern economic theories such as mercantilism will be analysed within their historical context.
