Even before the enactment of the "Staatsgrundgesetz über die allgemeinen Rechte der Staatsbürger für die im Reichsrathe vertretenen Königreiche und Länder" [Basic Law on the General Rights of Citizens for the Kingdoms and Lands Represented in the Imperial Council] in December 1867, there were numerous efforts on the part of the legislative power to establish guidelines for multi-ethnic and correspondingly multilingual coexistence in the Habsburg Monarchy in the context of education, which did not always proceed without friction.
Based on the March Revolution of 1848, an overview of the break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire up to the early phase of the Second Republic will be presented with regard to the handling of multilingualism in primary, secondary and tertiary education.
This proseminar will attempt to shed light on the differences in interpretation and implementation of various legislations as well as on the accompanying conflicts in the education system of Cisleithania and later Austria, which will be illuminated by exemplary case studies.
Brief introduction to the subject; reading and analyzing scientific essays and historical sources in class; oral presentation(s) and written paper(s).
The students are expected to take actively part in discussions, present their own topics and hand in a paper.
Basic literature will be announced in the course; research of further specific literature is part of the students' tasks.
