VU Special Themes of Quantumscience B: Experimental quantum information

Students will understand the basic concepts of quantum information processing and communication, that is, how and why to encode, store, manipulate and measure quantum information in physical systems.  Equipped with this theoretical framework, they will be able to compare state-of-the-art realizations in diverse experimental platforms and to discuss the strengths, weaknesses, and perspectives of each platform.

Theoretical framework:

  • quantum bits, superposition, entanglement 
  • quantum operations
  • measurement and decoherence
  • computational models
  • important algorithms
  • error correction 

Experimental implementations:

  • ion traps
  • neutral atoms
  • photons
  • quantum dots
  • nuclear magnetic resonance
  • superconducting circuits
  • hybrid systems

Continuous assessment (based on regular written and/or oral contribution by participants).

Oral student presentation and written exam.

Textbooks and research papers from the literature; details will be discussed in the first lecture.
