In this course students will gain insight into the basic principles of drug effects determined by the interaction between drugs and the organism. This includes the effects and mechanisms of drugs in the organism itself (pharmacodynamics) and the time-dependent changes in drug concentrations by the organism (pharmacokinetics). This knowledge is the prerequisite for clinical pharmacotherapy.
Pharmacodanymics:
- Mode of action of drugs including molecular structures and intracellular signaling cascades
- Qualitative aspects of drug actions
- Dose-response relationship
Pharmacokinetics:
- Pharmacokinetic processes (the LADME system)
- Pharmacokinetic parameters
- Compartment models
Pharmacogenetics:
- Explaining the risks of individual differences in drug responses determined by genetic variants of proteins controlling pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic processes.
Small group workshops
Portfolio of workshops
Recommended books for further reading are :
- Mutschler, Geisslinger, Kroemer, Ruth, Schäfer-Korting Mutschler Arzneimittelwirkungen: Lehrbuch der Pharmakologie und Toxikologie (Teil A - Allgemeiner Teil)
- Aktories, Förstermann, Hofmann, Starke Allgemeine und spezielle Pharmakologie und Toxikologie (Kapitel „Allgemeine Pharmakologie und Toxikologie)
- Rang, Dale: Rang and Dales’s Pharmacology (Section 1)
The successful completion of modules 4 and 7 is prerequisite for this course.
Subject to modifcations and amendments.
