Students will develop skills for organizing a summer school and for preparing an interdisciplinary program around a central theme. They will improve their skills in presenting their knowledge to an interdisciplinary audience and in discussing their specific research with international colleagues from similar fields.

The Research Area Mountain Regions will host the “International Mountain Conference” in September 2022. To provide PhD students that will attend the conference with extended possibilities to connect with experts and to discuss their research the “Student for Student Summer School 2022” (S4SSS2022) will be offered prior to the main conference. The main part of the S4SSS will be organized in a “Students for Students format”. That means local PhD students of the doctoral programs of the research focus (hereafter called trainers) will develop an interdisciplinary program and guide their international colleagues through the summer school. The program will be inspired and connected to the alpine landscapes surrounding the University Center of Obergurgl where the participants of the summer school will be hosted.

Supervised seminars and excursions, independent groupwork:

Following a “train the (future) trainers” strategy, two workshops will be organized to develop the program and prepare the trainers to carry out the summer school.  The first workshop (workshop I) will focus on the development of the S4SSS program. Previous experiences from S4SSS 2019 will serve as the baseline to design modules on climate and environment, on societal and touristic development and global change as well as natural hazards. All contents will have a particular focus on mountain regions.  At the beginning of workshop I the trainers will introduce their educational background and their specific field of research and, based on their expertise, fill the summer school modules with contents under the guidance of the lecturers. All module contents will be structured in three levels of complexity: Basics, advanced topics and individual research projects. All levels should contain exercises and/or field work.

To foster exchange and absorption of knowledge the trainers will also learn and practice non-formal learning methods to be used within the summer school.  Furthermore, the trainers will consistently be challenged to take care of the visibility of the common theme of the summer school (research in mountain environments).

Supervised seminars and excursions, independent groupwork.

Collaboration.

Will be selected in the frame of the preparation of session/workshop proposals for S4SSS

This lecture is open for PhD students attending one of the 4 doctoral programs of the Research Focus Alpine Space – Man Environment and for PhD students that are not already part of the doctoral programs but aim to become members.
