SUPERFLUOUS STUDIO

Urban Imprints: Architectural Sampling of Los Angeles

This semester Superfluous Studio: Urban Imprints investigates the potential of the sloped lots of Central East L.A. Specifically focusing on the slowly pedestrianized districts such as Siverlake and Echopark, the students will be asked to examine the public to private program changes that is inherent to the city and also be asked to  design a mixed use vertical plaza with a focus on connecting various height levels through their designs. The infrastructural focus of the design process will be to produce multilevel access tunnels with interwoven public spaces, private and semi private architectural programs within the previously mentioned districts of Los Angeles. The main aim of the design project is bringing together levels of privacy whilst bridging the height levels that the hill structures provide naturally. It is also required that the design teams maintain and build upon the strong relationship with the urban surrounding via pedestrian access.

The teams will analyze and configure landmark buildings and trope objects of Los Angeles and get familiar with the method of collecting, sampling and imprinting. Through various tasks the students will be able to construct and imagine new forms and new urban applications while emphasizing on the architectural production of collections that each team will be asked to develop. This exercise of collecting will bring forth discussions on shape and form as well as site and built form in hopes of forming urban relationships with existing and new architectural projects.
