PhotoBioReactor and BioSensing - Synthetic Landscape Lab
This course is primarily focused on prototyping based on step by step
learning from developing an idea and concept through research to
technical drawing, materiality and testing of a photobioreactor
powered by microorganisms cyanobacteria commonly called algae.
We will introduce a topic of photosynthetic prototypes and start
learning through research about Algae species and their different
growth requirements. We will look at different type of cyanobacteria,
mainly Chlorella Vulgaris and Spirulina but perhaps also more rare
species such as Dunaliella. We will learn about their needs for
survival and optimal growth and examine the intensive properties
defining the growth rate of Algae culture such as Temperature, pH,
Irradiance and Humidity via sensors and Arduino board measuring the
real time changes.The main objective of the course is to set up a
functional algae culture photobioreactor with oxygenation in the Lab.
We will set up a set of sensors for monitoring - into 3D printed
custom made sensor holders. We will construct a functional mechanism
and together develop a data monitoring system that will allow is to
not only monitor but also to visualise the data, for example via
Processing.
The main aim is setting up a functional prototype of a algae growing
Photobioreactor, but there are other connected parts of design
research including practical use of Arduino based sensors,
lasercutting, 3d printing, data visualisation and other.
