Students are able to master simple design and planning tasks. They are able to analyse a design task, to formulate an architectural programme, to create a spatial concept and to translate it into an architectural design of a high aesthetic level. You are able to develop, presentand present a project.
Architectural tasks for developing and advanced study of the design process and training of the personal creative ability; learning to understand design as a complex decision-making process; integration of design-relevant influencing factors.
THREE DIFFERENT BRIEFS
GRUPPE 1: KESER, VAILLO
Openness and Fragments: opaque-productive space
The studio investigates the possibilities of architectural expressions immanent in the design process and in the experience/use of architecture. We call this condition of the project openness.
GOAL
The aim of the semester is the design of a medium-sized building—between 500 and 2,000 m2— with open spatial conditions, i.e. differentiated and intricate areas capable of evoking diverse mental and physical (inter)actions. The proposed architecture should not have specific objectives, but is capable of many.
GRUPPE 2: BOW, MONCAYO ASAN, UITZ
Short version:
This studio aims to create a spatial oasis that generates recreational value by activating the microclimatic properties of an urban spring in the city center of Salzburg. The architectural design should be usable throughout the year but perform especially during the annual Salzburger Festspiele.
The term oasis refers in this context to a natural and cultural attraction point. In groups of two, the students will develop individual approaches to a formally expressive design that consists of a permanent core and seasonal cultural extensions. The spatial structure should address the potentials of the hidden Almkanal in its performative, climatic, and aesthetic dimensions. It is a negotiation between architectural object & ground as well as user & space in the context of a festive act in the historic city center. Should the new structure blend into the existing ensemble or contrastingly challenge it? This dialogue should go beyond mere form and serve as the basis for a concrete engagement with the site and the annual music festival.
site: 1 of 4 public squares in Salzburg
function: leisure & recreation, entertainment & culture, a new way of circulation
program: min. 3 spatial strategies as a core enveloping the spring (partly underground), each a separate microclimatic intervention / seasonal cultural extensions / café / areas for sitting-lying-dancing / restrooms
area/size: 50-100 m²
GRUPPE 1: KESER, VAILLO
Dialogue with the project, metaphor, fragments, ambiguous scales, iterative design, multimedia.
GRUPPE 2: BOW, MONCAYO ASAN, UITZ
The design task is divided into several milestones. The milestones will be announced at the first meeting. Construction, spatiality and tectonics are developed successively based on physical models and plans. Progress is discussed, evaluated and documented on a weekly basis using defined representations:
- model 1: 200 (later 1: 100; final scale depending on project)
- topview/groundplan 1:100 (later 1:50)
- section 1:100 (later 1:50)
First meeting 10.03.2021 9.00 online via Zoom (link on Olat>Links)

Will be discussed in the first lesson.
