After successful completion of the course students understand the basic principles of inverter technology and power electronics. They obtained knowledge on operation principles and differences of some circuit topologies. From these, students are able to derive characteristic parameters needed for dimensioning the circuit components.

Application areas of solid state power conversion (drive systems, energy distribution, line filters, power supplies, Illumination ...), Power semiconductor properties (overview), Passive components: Dimensioning – relevant properties and example, DC-DC-converter: basic circuits without and with isolation (half bridge, buck, boost, flyback...), PWM DC-link inverters: operation principle, modulation schemes, Multilevel inverters, Soft switching principle, Line commutated circuits: B6, B12, commutation principle, commutation loop, limits of operation, Hints on EMC, Principles for dimensioning.
