202112 VO Philosophy of Science
winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 03.11.2021 | Place course on memo listfamiliarity with topics and debates in philosophy of the sciences; the ability to think critically about the sciences.
The sciences enjoy an elevated social status as a source of knowledge. Do they deserve this status, and if so, why? What are the sciences anyway, and why do we engage in them? In this class we will discuss these and other questions that are crucial for anyone who is in any way touched by the sciences – from students to experienced academics, as well as anyone who ever seeks out medical advice. Particularly in our age of conspiracy theories and so-called fake news, it is increasingly important to cultivate a critical and informed understanding of the nature and role of the sciences.
