222401 VO Anthropology, Wellbeing and Spirituality in the Age of Digital Transformation
winter semester 2021/2022 | Last update: 03.01.2022 | Place course on memo listThe students will develop a basic understanding of the anthropological challenges of our time, understand the practical implications of contemporary scientific and technological developments, and learn why the disciplinary compartilisation of the contemporary academia has become problematic.
The lectures will first deal with the phenomenon of transhumanism as symptom of a spiritual crisis of our western civilizations. In doing so, it will particularly focus on the transhumanist concept of scientific knowledge, which builds on the scientific revolutions of the 17. Century, such as Descartes and Hobbes. The problematic features of this concept of science will be traced back to the spiritual and scientific revolution of the late Middle Ages. Against this background, the second part of the lecture will elaborate the basic lines of an anthropology that is prepared to cope with the challenges of the digital revolution. In addition to philosophical, anthropological and neuroscientific debates on technology, particular attention will be paid to the connection between spiritual practices and scientific practices of knowledge-generation, following Meister Eckhart and Michel Foucault's concept of transformative 'technologies of the self'.
This course will have the character of an interactive face-to-face course. Active participation will be an important part of the grade in addition to the assessment of the oral examination. Each student is expected to prepare the respective lecture unit by reading the corresponding primary text of my book on the lecture topic and to send at least one, at most two questions to me by email 24 hours prior to the lecture.
Aktive Mitarbeit und mündliche Prüfung.
