Students know the most important developments both in intellectual and social history which were necessary for the development of the European universities in the Middle Ages. They understand the philosophical and theological concerns associated with these developments in their historical context, which should also help them to understand more recent developments in academia.

Reconstruction of developments in social and intellectual history mainly of the 11th and 12th centuries leading up to a new culture of higher education in Western Europe (scholasticism, universities). Presentation of important figures in these developments (e.g., Abelard). Presentation of important scholarly approaches concerning these developments.
